Poem of the Day

Neighborhood Heir
James D. McCallister
Careful—the repulsed bourgeoisie
neighborhood heir, committed
like an antebellum preacher
wandering permanent,
keeps the now-smoking life;
The fire-comfortable trade
road stretches vast, and once
asking the seventh notable throne,
he gestures first behind comedy;
“Dutiful arms serve told-traveler songs
outside a clear god,” his call echoing
across streets of pocked pavement
ancient with planned tenacity
